@a_mothers_cry: Quinzena Rancefer, 31, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury in connection with the death of her 2-month-old daughter. The case began when police were called to Rancefer’s home after the infant was found unresponsive. According to court records, Rancefer had been holding her daughter on a couch when she fell asleep. She told investigators that her daughter normally slept in a bassinet, but on this occasion the baby was positioned between her and the back of the couch so she would not fall. Rancefer’s cousin later arrived at the apartment and found the infant face down and mostly underneath a couch cushion. The cousin had to hit Rancefer several times to wake her before discovering that the baby was not breathing. Emergency responders pronounced the infant dead. Court records say the baby died from asphyxia caused by overlay and wedging. During the investigation, police searched the apartment and reported finding a glass pipe with burnt residue, a torch lighter, suspected marijuana and several prescription medications. Investigators also obtained the results of an oral drug screen conducted after the child’s death. According to court records, Rancefer tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. A Department of Child Services assessment also found that the baby had been drug-exposed and had THC in her system. Rancefer ultimately pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury rather than going to trial. She was sentenced to 10 years total, with three years suspended. The plea agreement included a seven-year sentencing cap for the portion of the sentence to be served, and the judge imposed the maximum allowed under that agreement.
