This is exactly why we, as Black people, remain stagnant and divided. We’re so afraid of being labeled a sellout that we refuse to collaborate, even when those collaborations could create real change and open doors for our people. Jay-Z has done more to help get our people out of prison and create opportunities for us than many of y’all are willing to acknowledge. Instead of being so quick to criticize him, look at the money he’s making the NFL put toward our communities, despite everything the league has done. He’s using his position, his influence, and his business relationships to make them invest in our people. That’s what creating change looks like. And then to put Black people on that stage with the same messaging? Look at Kendrick’s performance and Bad Bunny’s! Jay-Z has been standing up to the NFL over its treatment of Black and Brown artists for years. At the end of the day, you’re still going to watch the NFL. Black men are still aspiring to play in that league, and whether you like it or not, the NFL is making Black families millionaires. We spend so much time worrying about who doesn’t like us that we miss the bigger picture. Sometimes, this shit is just about business. We live in fucking America, and we have to learn how to navigate the system, create opportunities, and make it work for our people. It’s about using the power and access we have to make a difference. Smh.
