Last week as I watched people I know discuss the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a former maternity nurse from Massachusetts who killed her three children while suffering postpartum psychosis, I grew increasingly angry. Clancy, whose trial is nearing its end after much harrowing testimony about how unwell she was when she strangled Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, was clearly suffering. But smart people, mainly men, were on social media claiming that the “depression” that mothers suffer after childbirth was not hormonal but due to the difficulty they have subordinating their own needs. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, by my Sicilian mum and Persian dad, mental health was taboo, so I heard only whispers about what happened to my mum, who was ripped out of my life when I was two years old. Mum was 24 when she had me in 1986, her only child. She worked at a law firm and, according to my dad, she had a brilliant pregnancy; she was calm, I arrived on time and there were no complications. One of my earliest memories is of my mum running down a hill after my dad. I was about one or two years old, trying to follow her, crawling and crying. As I got older I would overhear my extended family whisper about how all the kitchen cupboards in the house where I was born were slashed from where Mum had hurled knives at Dad. Dad does not remember ever hearing the terms “postnatal depression” or “postnatal psychosis”, but my maternal grandmother told him that her sister — my mother’s aunt — had become extremely depressed and went through the same kind of behavioural change after childbirth. For most of my life, I was ashamed of my mum’s story and felt responsible for ruining her life, so I hid it. But I’ve been shocked at the number of friends who’ve responded to my fundraising emails with: “My wife had this, I felt so powerless, I didn’t know what to do.” #postpartum #clancy #lindsayclancycase #usnews #MentalHealth
