I think in the beginning of the end they first remember the version of you they were tired of. then they reconcile that by blaming you and making you the villain and absolving themselves 100% of responsibility, even though subconsciously they know that that's not the truth. and finally, when it's all said and done, and it's clear that you two will probably never speak again, they remember the person they loved and they remember the person that loved them. and for the rest of their lives, just like you, they will have to deal with the absence of the other. they will catch glimpses of favorite places, they will hear your favorite songs while grocery shopping, smell your perfume randomly in a small sterile office where they shouldn't be able to smell any perfume at all. it's devastating, really. but if you think about it, if it was any sort of long-term real relationship, you rearranged your entire life around that person. it's impossible to remember all bad or all good. truly the definition of bittersweet.
