A life abroad can look successful from the outside—good salary, nice house, holidays and money being sent back home. But there’s a side people conveniently ignore. You can send thousands of dollars home, but money cannot sit beside your ageing parents when they are lonely. It cannot hold their hand when they are sick, take them to an appointment, hear their stories, or give them the comfort of having their children physically present. There is a difference between providing for your family and actually being there for your family. Money is useful while people can enjoy it and make use of it. But when old age takes away their independence, what they often need most isn't another bank transfer—it’s your time, presence, love and care. Some people spend their entire lives building a life for themselves overseas, convincing themselves that sending money home makes up for everything else. But one day they may realise that the years they could have spent with their parents, children and family are the one thing money can never buy back. A bigger bank balance doesn't necessarily mean a richer family life. Sometimes the greatest wealth is simply being there.
