In his Germania (c. 98 AD), the historian Tacitus struggled to categorize an enigmatic people known as the Veneti [Venedi]. Unlike the steppe nomads, they did not live on horseback; they built timber strongholds, fought on foot with heavy wooden shields, and vanished into the trackless marshes with supernatural speed. For nearly four centuries, classical cartographers marked their land simply as the edge of the known world (Oceanus Sarmaticus). [c. 551 AD] The Great Rupture As the Western Roman Empire collapsed and the Great Migration shook Europe, the Gothic chronicler Jordanes recorded the sudden awakening of the north in his Getica (551 AD): “Born from one stock, they now hold three names: the Veneti, the Antes, and the Sclaveni.” The quiet forest substrate had shattered its borders, splitting into two distinct martial forces. Expansion [c. 577 – 586 AD]: Overrunning imperial forts, tens of thousands of Sclaveni crossed the frozen Danube, permanently settling Macedonia, Thrace, and the Peloponnese, transforming former Roman provinces into semi-independent tribal territories (Sklavinias). [c. 375 – 602 AD] The Antes: The Iron Vanguard of the Steppe Further east, sprawling across the forest-steppe between the Dniester and the Dnieper [associated with the Penkovka archaeological culture], stood the Antes.
