By default I'm the type of person who wants to see the good in everyone and tries to give the benefit of the doubt. I sat with this one for several days trying to decide if it is truly an intentional dog whistle or an unfortunate accident. I did a quick search to see if Converse or Nike have a history of such things and found none. (That doesn't mean there was none ftr) Despite all that I've come to the conclusion that there is no defending Converse in this political and social climate. We owe it to our black communities to take this stuff very seriously and draw a clear line in the sand. If it looks like a dog whistle, we need to treat it as such. Converse fucked up and needs to be held accountable. We need to send a clear message to the world that this is not ok and will not be excused or tolerated. Period. I will be voting blue this fall but I will also be voting every day with my wallet. Fuck Converse. Fuck Nike. Black Lives Matter.

They’ve self-identified parts of their egos with a product *and* don’t want to feel guilty/complicit. It’s decades of consumerist propaganda and the absence of a self that isn’t tied to products and objects. These objects are how we “present” to other human beings and it’s all carefully curated, consciously or not. An ad like this results in an external condemnation of parts of their perceived identities, a betrayal, and a resultant sense of moral injury.

I've consistently owned at least one pair of Converse since I was 16 because they're genuinely the most comfortable for my feet and I'm an old school emo kid, however I haven't purchased a pair new in almost ten years. That being said, this was rage bait to garner more attention than an uncontroversial ad would have on its own and it's slimy business practice. I'm so tired of my favorite things turning to irredeemable garbage. 😞
