My husband saw the incident through our window and immediately yelled that a police officer had tackled a child in our neighbor's front yard. I want to be clear that I do not believe all police officers are bad, just as not all people are bad. However, based on what I witnessed, I cannot justify the way this child was treated. This isn't about whether someone likes children or chooses to have them. The point is that a seven-year-old child did not understand what was happening. His mother also gave me permission to share that he was so frightened by the encounter that he urinated himself. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I've witnessed. I grew up in an unstable household, and even then I never witnessed an interaction like this between a police officer and a child. Children should be able to play outside without anyone expecting something like this to happen. From what I counted, approximately 10 or 11 police vehicles responded for a child this size. When I asked the officer why he had stopped him in the first place, he responded, "I asked them to stop, and they wouldn't." I don't know what the issue is with e-bikes, and frankly, that's not what concerns me. What concerns me is that a seven-year-old child was, in my view, treated in a way that was unnecessary and deeply upsetting.
