Hair growth: what actually works (derm POV) 👇 -Minoxidil (topical or oral)
Best evidence. Helps prolong the growth phase and increase hair density. Topical is first-line; low-dose oral (which works really well btw) can be an option under the guidance of your dermatologist. -Biotin
Only helpful if you’re deficient in biotin, which is very uncommon (most people get enough from their diet). Not a go-to hair loss treatment. -LED helmets (low-level light therapy)
Moderate evidence. Can support hair growth and density with consistent use over time. Great alternative for those who do not or cannot use topical or oral minoxidil. -Rosemary oil
Not as thoroughly researched as minoxidil. Few small studies show that it may help when compared to 2% minoxidil but likely a very mild benefit. Also, some people can get irritation from it. Not my go-to option. -Pumpkin seed oil (oral)
Limited but promising data. May help with androgen-related hair loss by reducing the hormone responsible for androgenetic hair loss, but more research is needed. -Ketoconazole shampoos (like Nizoral) some evidence for supporting hair growth by reducing inflammation and androgen effects—but think of it as an add-on, not a primary treatment. Helpful for scalp health, but not a replacement for proven options like minoxidil. -Caffeine shampoo
Minimal evidence. May temporarily stimulate follicles, but it is a very short-contact topical shampoo so unlikely to significantly impact hair growth on its own. Bottom line: stick with evidence-based treatments like minoxidil first, and consider adjuncts if you want to build a routine. #hairloss #hairgrowth #drheejink
