@burstdigitalnz: IKEA asked customers to find a hidden tag on their furniture. The oldest piece was 55 years old 🪑 Myth busted. #marketing #advertising #branding #viralmarketing
furniture from 1970 is not same as furniture from 2026

I love Ikea, but this sounds like a survivorship bias.

probably because ALL products (Ikea included) were made to actually last with a better quality rating 20 to 50 years ago...

IKEA furnitures will collapse on themselves if you have to move them for any reason. People don’t get to take photo of the stickers for the cabinet they had to throw out.

The problem people have is that they don’t follow the instructions on assembling the furniture properly they tell you not to use a drill when you assemble it for a reason. And then I don’t have the patience to hand screw in the screws then they put it too far and crack things And assemble by themselves and then when they try to move them already damaged.

Old IKEA furniture are way sturdier than the newer ones. Better stop buying new. Buy the used ones instead. I have the Klippan sofa because my brother have one. It was so old but the body is still good. Bought new, it starts falling apart in just few months. And the funniest part is there are specific models that have warranty, which of course not the one that I bought. So I just have to use the shitty ones.

it all depends on what you buy from them. their products range to fit budgets. obviously, the more inexpensive pieces will be made with cheaper materials. but I have pieces of furniture from Ikea that are solid wood and they're great quality.

IKEA has multiple levels of quality. My shelves are solid bamboo with metal reinforcements.

They won’t be able to keep using this campaign! It’s pretty obvious that the quality has gone downhill… 😅

Where are you located, bot? :
Most furniture is flat pack now. However, not all flat pack is the same. Ikea is strong, well engineered and they take care to actually HIDE their screws on the interior or behind matching veneer caps. My dad just spent thousands of dollars on a Ashley furniture bed that had a bright silver screw fully visible on the side.

AbsurdlyAwkward :
if the average age is around 18 years then that means the last time they made good stuff was about 18 years ago or they sold a lot of stuff that year. it does not prove that the stuff they sell now is of good quality. also 4000 is a very small pool to gather from when they sell billions of products a year. so on the surface looks good, but of further inspection it seems like there needs to be way more data to definitively prove their stuff was and continues to be good quality.

I have a Kallax from 2002. Back then it was made of more solid material. That thing survived 3 moves and two of my siblings. Still standing btw

This is just bad statistics. The oldest stuff was made in high-quality. While the new ones are not. The ones that really last were made to last. The best thing to do is look at the most recent one submitted. Compare how many there are in that pool to the pool. Not perfect, but it’s probably a better idea.

Their stuff is just okay. Fair price, delivering/building is easy and last fairly long. However some moving companies will not insure them as they fall apart with frequent moves. Its amazing apartment furniture but as soon as i get a house im building with hard wood.

i would much rather buy a used ikea shelf built 10-20 years ago than the same model new. even if it's the same price.
