A mother was told her young son might never walk independently. So she designed something that would let him experience what walking felt like anyway. Debby Elnatan’s son, Rotem, has cerebral palsy and severe mobility difficulties. Doctors told her when he was young that he had very little awareness of his legs. Debby refused to accept that he should spend his childhood only sitting or being carried. So she began experimenting. Eventually, she created a special harness that connects a child to an adult at the waist and feet. When the adult takes a step, the child moves with them. Together, they can stand, walk and explore side by side. The invention became known as the Upsee and was later developed for families around the world. It doesn’t make a child suddenly able to walk independently. But it can give children with serious mobility disabilities the experience of being upright, moving with their parents and seeing the world from a completely different perspective.
