Because the timeframe changes. “Last year” means one calendar year. “The last 12 months” means a rolling 365-day period. “This year” means year-to-date. And I trade across different accounts while also running a software business. Those are completely different measurements. The number can also move because trading results change every day. That’s why I think context matters more than one screenshot or one headline number. If someone says they made X, ask: Over what period? In which account? Realized or unrealized? Trading only or total business income? Those details matter. And even documented past results still do not tell you what happens next. I’m much more interested in transparency around the measurement than trying to make one number sound impressive. Past performance moves. Markets move. Timeframes move. So the number should change when the underlying data changes.
