The Bhagavad Gita serves as a personal guide. It is not an external dialogue but an internal one: between the ordinary human personality, full of questions about the meaning of life, and our deepest Self, which is divine. The Gita does not present a system of philosophy. It offers something to every seeker after God, of whatever temperament, by whatever path. It is a handbook for Self-realization and a guide to action. The Bhagavad Gita is a Hindu scripture, written in verses, that forms one part of the Mahabharata epic, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. There are eighteen chapters which are classified into three six-chapters. The first third deals with karma yoga (the yoga of selfless actions), the second with jnana yoga (the yoga of knowledge) and the last with bhakti yoga (the yoga of devotion). In the Gita, Prince Arjuna faces a moral dilemma that shakes his very core: should he take an action that is necessary but morally questionable? Prince Arjuna opposes fighting his kin and turns to Krishna, a manifestation of God, for guidance. What follows is a thorough exchange that forms the heart of the Gita. It offers essential guidance on topics such as knowledge, devotion, spirituality, and meditation. The central subject of the Bhagavad Gita is not the external war, but the war within. It tackles the fight for self-mastery that is present within every person, a battle that must be fought if one wishes to triumph at life. It offers questions and answers on how to successfully survive in a world full of obstacles and change. It is a map for life. One of the most appealing features of the Gita for our times is that it clears up misunderstandings about the spiritual life and shows it for what it is: active, joyful, intentional, a middle path between extremes that transfigures everyday living.
