For more than 40 years, Tim Miller has lived with one question: What happened to his 16-year-old daughter, Laura? Laura disappeared in League City, Texas, in 1984. Her remains were found 17 months later in an abandoned oil field between Houston and Galveston that became known as the “Texas Killing Fields,” where dozens of women and girls were found over several decades. Miller told jurors this week how Laura’s disappearance consumed him. Months after her remains were recovered, he returned to the field to put up a cross and found one of her bones still there. “That place made me crazy,” he testified. “I almost lived out there in that damned field.” Laura’s death later drove Miller to found Texas EquuSearch, which he calls “Laura’s legacy.” Then, in 2022, James Elmore contacted Miller and began revealing details about Laura’s death that had never been made public. Prosecutors said Elmore prepared a lethal dose of cocaine and handed it to Clyde Hedrick, who gave it to Laura. Elmore also admitted helping move her body afterward. Hedrick had long been suspected in multiple Killing Fields deaths, but died by suicide in March before prosecutors could seek murder indictments against him. This week, a Galveston County jury convicted Elmore of manslaughter in Laura’s death and sentenced him to the maximum 20 years in prison. More than four decades after Laura disappeared, the case finally produced a criminal conviction.
