DANGME FESTIVALS SEASON 2026: MANYA JORPANYA NGMAYEM FESTIVAL VISIT TO MANYA YO — THE ANCESTRAL HOME IN THE SHAI HILLS In the video: An elder shows the people the ancestral settlements at Manya Yo — the ancestral home in the Shai Hills. He explains the history of the settlements and shares knowledge about their significance. This particular area is where, according to the history shared, the ancestors used to perform the Dangme puberty rite called Dipo. Today, as part of the Manya Jorpanya Ngmayem Festival 2026, the people of Manya Jorpanya, within the Sɛ (Shai) Dangme Traditional Area, visited the Shai Hills Resource Reserve to pay homage to their ancestral home at the Manya Yo attraction site. The visit was led by HRM Nɛnɛ Dr. Tei-Djahene Korabo IV, Manya Jorpanya Matsɛ and Senior Asafoatse of the Sɛ (Shai) Traditional Area, together with sub-chiefs, family heads and community members. At the ancestral site, the community performed customary rites, prayers and libation as part of the activities marking their annual Ngmayem Festival. HONOURING OUR ANCESTRAL HERITAGE For the people of Manya Jorpanya, the visit provides an opportunity to reconnect with their ancestral roots and honour the generations who came before them. The Shai Hills hold an important place in the ancestral history and cultural heritage of the Sɛ (Shai) Dangme people. The visit allows the present generation, particularly the youth, to learn about and appreciate the history, sacrifices and experiences associated with their ancestors. PRESERVING OUR HISTORY The sharing of ancestral history at Manya Yo provides an opportunity for younger generations to learn directly about their roots and the places connected to their ancestors. Such oral history and cultural knowledge are important in keeping the stories, traditions and experiences of our people alive and ensuring that they are passed on to future generations. FOSTERING UNITY AND IDENTITY The visit brings citizens together at a place connected to their ancestral history and strengthens their shared sense of identity, heritage and community. The Manya Jorpanya Ngmayem Festival therefore serves not only as a celebration, but also as an opportunity to remember where we come from, honour those who came before us and pass their history on to the generations that follow.
