Here are 10 tips to improve your sketching: 1. Try switching from pencil to pen for sketching. It can seem much more daunting to use something permanent, but ink will show you your mistakes- and that’s the best way to learn. 2. Allow yourself to fail. Start treating your mistakes as learning milestones- you’re always a mistake away from improving. 3. Build a redrawing habit. When you do make a mistake on an ink sketch, try redrawing it on the next page and doing it differently. This can be a great way to learn what looks good to you visually and what doesn’t. 4. Decide on a focal point early on- choose where you want to draw the viewers eye, and put the most detail and contrast here. This will keep you from overworking. 5. Write notes to yourself on the page. Start treating your sketchbook like a study notebook- it’s for you to learn and develop- write what’s improving and what still needs work. 6. Continuing on that point, start writing down the names of what you’re drawing. Whether it’s a place or a specific type of object, writing the name next to it will help you remember it later. The goal is to build a visual library in your head to reference later. 7. Don’t be afraid of making a mess. Sometimes the way to make your best work is to allow it to have an ugly phase, and to fix it from there. 8. At first, don’t draw anything you can’t see while squinting. Draw the tree, not every leaf. 9. Keep your hatching and shading to a minimum- a lot of the time we artists go heavy on the shading and give less attention to the contour and linework- which is arguably more important. 10. Remind yourself to have fun! If you’re getting frustrated or feeling too tight, feeling like you need to draw something perfect, then it might be time to let go and draw in the other direction.
