When you're bringing the shopping from the boot of the jam jar to the kitchen, do you line up the bags at the front of the door, walk in, take your shoes off, and then crane in the bags into the hall and carry them all in from there? Or, do you just do multiple journeys from the kitchen to the car and mop the floor after the job's done?

Completely agree!! it really pees me off! My brother in law and his partner ( despite being asked to, think they pretended that they didn't hear!! ) walked into my front room, then later up my stairs to the bathroom! I had to grit my teeth, put a false smile on my face and bare it. All I wanted to do was scream " Get your f****** shoes off"

I would never ask someone to take shoes off for downstairs and if they asked I would say no, but we have wooden floors. Upstairs, yes as there are carpets.

You should always ask what the host prefers, but it's not a mental thing for people to do. I personally don't want my guests to take them off as it inconveniences them

If you're entering a home for the first time, it would be good to ask what the owner prefers. I will tend towards slippers if it's first thing in the morning, if I am not due to go back outside, or I fancy staying in the carpeted areas of the house. I kept my shoes on in the HMO I stayed in whilst living in Brum, because the floors were freezing. Whether it's slippers or shoes, I like to keep my feet in something when I'm walking around. I thought taking your shoes off in the house was more of a non-European or at least non-Anglo/Celtic thing: it seems to be more evenly distributed nowadays.

I thought you were about to touch on the class aspect of this because it’s considered very common to take shoes off. Crazy! My parents never take shoes off. I always do for same reason you do. It’s gross! But very much considered lower class to do so 🫠
