They were told they were getting promoted in the Mafia. Instead, they walked into their own execution. On June 14, 1986, Tony and Michael Spilotro went to a house in Bensenville, Illinois. According to later testimony from one of their killers, Tony had been promised a promotion to captain. Michael was supposed to become a “made” member of the Chicago Outfit. But the men waiting downstairs had gathered to kill them. Tony had been sent to Las Vegas in 1971 to protect the Outfit’s casino skim. Cash was secretly removed before it appeared on the books and passed back to mob bosses. His job was to protect that money and keep a low profile. Instead, Tony built a criminal operation of his own. His Hole in the Wall Gang burglarized homes and businesses, breaking through walls and roofs to avoid alarms. Stolen valuables were sold through his Gold Rush pawn shop. And his reputation for violence went back years. In Chicago, Tony had been accused of participating in the 1962 “M&M murders,” including torturing William McCarthy by putting his head in a vise. He was tried and acquitted in that case in 1983. In Vegas, his longtime associate Frank Cullotta admitted killing suspected informant Jerry Lisner and said Tony had ordered it. Then Tony’s circle began falling apart. In July 1981, police caught members of his burglary crew during a break-in at Bertha’s Gifts and Home Furnishings. An informant inside the gang had tipped off investigators. The following year, Cullotta also became a government witness. Tony was now facing testimony from a man who knew his criminal operation from the inside. There were also allegations that Tony was having an affair with Geri Rosenthal, the wife of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, the casino operator whose interests Tony was supposed to protect. A former FBI supervisor later described Tony as operating independently, keeping proceeds and acting without approval. His side operations, criminal cases and personal conflicts had made him a growing problem for the bosses in Chicago. By June 1986, they had decided to have him killed. The supposed promotion meeting brought both brothers into a basement where a group of Outfit members was waiting. Nicholas Calabrese later testified that he tackled Michael and held his legs while another man strangled him. During the attack, he heard Tony ask for time to say a prayer. Both brothers were killed. Their bodies were transported to an Indiana cornfield and buried together. Their deaths inspired the ending of Casino, with Joe Pesci playing a character based on Tony. But the real brothers were killed in a basement before their bodies were taken to the field. In 2007, Calabrese described the ambush during the Family Secrets trial. The promotion was a lie designed to bring them to the men who would kill them. #thevoidhole
