They received donations, gifts, trips, and even a house through charitable organizations. But behind closed doors, Gypsy’s life was very different. This type of abuse is now commonly associated with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which a caregiver makes another person appear sick or causes unnecessary medical problems in order to receive attention or sympathy. As Gypsy became a teenager and young adult, she desperately wanted freedom. She secretly used the internet and eventually met a man named Nicholas Godejohn online. Gypsy and Nicholas developed a relationship. Gypsy began talking to him about her life and how trapped she felt with her mother. Eventually, they discussed a plan to get Dee Dee out of Gypsy’s life. In 2015, Nicholas went to the Blanchard home. Dee Dee was killed while Gypsy was present in the house. Afterward, Gypsy and Nicholas left the area and traveled to Missouri. They were eventually found by authorities after messages they had posted online helped investigators locate them. The truth about Gypsy’s life quickly became public. People discovered that many of the illnesses Dee Dee had claimed Gypsy suffered from were not real. They also learned about the years of control and medical abuse Gypsy had experienced.
