I read somewhere that improving hearing & sight (through hearing aids & glasses/contacts) are the most important things in preventing & delaying progressing dementia. Because they’re interacting with the world around them again, it keeps the brain firing more like exercising a muscle. You don’t stretch or exercise it, it looses strength. Same for the brain when you can’t hear the small things like birds, the fridge hum, or foot steps behind you. We process so many sounds normally & when they’re not processing the softer sounds those neurons are just wasting away. Anyway, I’m crying now at 9 in the morning cause I’m so happy for your buddy!

Watch for ear infections. Two loved ones got infections from their devices, they then started wearing them less and less. I don't think they were good at cleaning them at first.

for bloodwork, check out Siphox Health. it's a little pod you stick on the upper arm that just collects capillary blood so you can't see the needle and barely feel anything.

aawww this makes me so happy! can I give a small suggestion? My dad got hearing aids a few years ago and he's doing awesome but two things worth mentioning: first months are to adapt so sometimes we had to go back to tune them because he heard "too much" 😂 and also it may be a bit overwhelming at first to be able to hear so much. My dad takes them off when he's fed up of us yapping 😂

@FatFattheSuperCat: When my middle daughter was in pre k she’d come home and barf from migraines- 3 yr olds shouldn’t have migraines so a whole slew of tests had to happen. Everything was normal but the puking got more frequent and the headaches got worse so one day a GP said let’s check her eyesight since she knows her letters. Bam-o-wham-o the kid could not see. Off we went to the eh dr and he said yikes I can’t help, you need a specialist. So off we went. She had severe amblyopia and her script changed every 3-6 months for YEARS. Those were fun bills but I digress. We had to do “ push ups” on her bad eye so it could get STRONG. And she had to patch her eye for YEARS. The first time she put on a pair of glasses I cried because I felt like such a bad mom. She looked outside and said, “ momma look the trees have leaves and the store has a roof.” The dr said they had no clue how she could follow along in class because she couldn’t see the board even in the front row.

my son is hard of hearing and when he got his hearing aids he was amazed what he could hear clearly with them. and his behavior got better and he wasn't as frustrated when trying to talk to people.

As an OT, I’ve learned that older individuals or the elderly really miss connections, friends, and romance. If you haven’t already, I would start finding some groups he can join (slowly so it doesn’t overwhelm him), like bingo or activity nights, so he can connect more with others, be a part of the community, and feel as if he is leading a more purposeful life! It can make a huge difference, and it’s possible that when he was interested in you, he really just missed having someone close who truly cared about him.
