Bassline of the week #36. Happy new year! 🎊 The inaugural bassline of 2024 comes from one of my absolute favorite cuts, “Onda” by Cassiano. This timeless gem hails from his 1976 “Cuban Soul - 18 Kilates” album, a sonic relic from the era when Jimmy Carter clinched victory over Gerald Ford, and Martin Scorsese’s cinematic masterpiece, “Taxi Driver,” hit the silver screen. Imagine the rhythmic backdrop of Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back In Town” and The Bee Gees’ “You Should Be Dancing” echoing in the background. Where were you when these classics graced the airwaves? Genival Cassiano dos Santos AKA “Cassiano” is a Brazilian multi instrumentalist and songwriter. Starting his journey in Rio de Janeiro, Cassiano’s career blossomed when he collaborated with Brazilian legend Tim Maia in 1970, paving the way for a flourishing solo career. His debut release on RCA dropped the very next year. “Onda,” translating to “Wave” in English, perfectly encapsulates the meditative and repetitive nature of the track. It’s my understanding that Cassiano played most of not all the instruments on this cut. Anyone know for sure? It’s an amazingly written line and solidly played. It evolves slightly over the course of the nearly 8 minute length of this track. Presented here is the way the line is introduced in the first 8 measures. Interestingly, cut sits smack dab in the middle of two keys. It lies halfway between D minor and Eb minor. I chose to tune my bass up 50¢, but could have just as easily tuned down and played it in Ebm. I had a little varispeed fun and slowed/pitched the track down to about 440hz, I’ll throw that up in my story for yall to check out 🎶😎 This groove was sampled by one of my favorite groups of the last decade, @NxWxrries, consisting of @anderson._paak and @knxwledge. Check out “Link Up” to hear the chop. What a special duo. I had the pleasure of catching them live at SXSW about 8 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite live music experiences of all time.
