I have this fear of wasting my life. I don’t want to wake up one day and realise I spent years waiting to become the person I knew I could be. I used to think becoming her would come down to motivation. That one day I’d wake up more disciplined, more organised, more consistent… and somehow just be different. But then I realised something painfully obvious: if nothing changes, nothing changes. I can’t keep making the same choices every day and expect to somehow become a different version of myself. And I’m starting to realise becoming her probably isn’t one huge, life-changing decision. It’s all the really small ones. Sometimes it’s literally something as stupidly small as where I leave my phone at night. If it’s beside my bed, half-asleep me can hit snooze without thinking. If I put it across the room, I’ve made the choice I want to make slightly easier before the day has even started. And that choice makes the next one easier. Getting up gives me time to walk. Having time means I eat breakfast. Getting ready makes me more likely to leave the house. Planning my food means I’m not starving later trying to figure out what to eat. The little decisions create momentum. And momentum works both ways. One snooze doesn’t ruin a day. Neither does scrolling, working from the couch or ordering takeaway. None of those things make it a “bad” day. But sometimes one reactive choice makes the next one easier too, and suddenly it’s nighttime and you feel like you’ve spent the whole day catching up with yourself. So maybe discipline isn’t about forcing yourself to make the harder choice over and over again. Maybe it’s about making the choices that support the person you want to be easier to make. Put the phone across the room. Lay your clothes out. Pack your bag. Buy the groceries before you’re hungry. Because maybe you don’t become the person you want to be and then start making her choices. Maybe you start making her choices, and that’s how you become her. The little choices become your days. And your days become your life. What’s one tiny thing you do that makes life easier for your future self? I want to steal some of yours …
