@elite.whispers: In March 1697, an English colonist named Hannah Duston was kidnapped from her home in Haverhill, Massachusetts by a group of Native Americans. She'd recently given birth to a daughter, but since the baby slowed down the raiding party as they made off with Duston, one of her captors allegedly "dash'd out the Brains of the Infant, against a Tree." Right then and there, Hannah Duston began plotting her revenge. She seized her opportunity a few weeks later. Duston had been placed with a Native American family and one night she waited up until each one of them went to sleep. Then, with the help of two other captive colonists, she picked up a tomahawk and proceeded to hack and bludgeon the entire family of four adults and six children to death — then scalped them. More than a century later, as the U.S. government swept westward across the continent and took all remaining lands from Indigenous populations, Duston became a folk hero, a symbol of how to stand up to the "bloodthirsty savages." To this day, she's honored with numerous statues throughout the Northeast, depicted with a tomahawk in one hand and scalps in the other. However, many now believe that those statues should come down — and that Duston is not a hero at all, but instead a genocidal figure who murdered children in cold blood.
