@nurse.gwenny: A VP shunt (full name ventriculoperitoneal shunt) is a way we manage ICP in patients with chronic pathologies...not like the temporary thing we use in acute brain injury: external ventricular drain. Know how to spot signs of increasing ICP and get the patient to definitive care! Intended for educational purposes only. Always follow your local protocols. #ERNurse #EmergencyNurse #CEN #CFRN #CTRN
I’ve had VP shunts for 10 years for IIH. But last year I got a new type of shunt. It’s still in the ventricles but then drains into the venous sinus artery in the brain so it’s all contained into the skull.

For some reason, they don’t really know how to diagnose a shunt malfunction in adults. I’ve had a shunt all my life, and my last revision was done when I was 29. But it took them over a month to realize that the shit was the problem. Despite having all the symptoms, and going to the hospital multiple times (and being discharged multiple times), they eventually said it was a migraine and sent me on my way. It wasn’t until I had a seizure, and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, that someone decided that it was time to replace the shunt.

my good friend of over 30 years now has hydrocephalus. he has had so many issues with his shunts throughout the years it has been awful. he has told me many times to take the worst migraine headache I have ever had in times it by 10 and that is a normal day for him. he says when it gets stopped up it's all he can do not to off himself. we live in an area where we have very subpar Healthcare and when it starts acting up he is in such distress
