Relax. Slow down. Why is everyone in such a hurry? What’s the rush? You want to build a house — you want it done quickly. You want to open a restaurant — you want it done quickly. Everything has to happen immediately. What usually happens is that someone decides, “We’re opening on this date,” even though that date isn’t realistic at all. It may not even be practically possible to open a restaurant within, say, two months. And what’s the downside of rushing? When you don’t give enough time to the design process, when you don’t allow time for research, you start saying, “Just give us the drawings quickly. We’ll manage the rest.” Clients also need to understand that the best designs in the world weren’t created overnight. They took time. They involved research, careful thinking, planning, and attention to detail. A lot of important details get missed simply because the client is in a rush and wants everything done immediately. But it doesn’t work like that. The project will take the time it needs. If it realistically requires eight months or ten months, that’s what it requires. Sometimes clients think that if they keep putting pressure on the architect, the work will somehow get finished faster. It doesn’t.
