Social Infrastructure Through Sectional Density This project explores housing as a relational system rather than a fixed typology; a vertically layered structure where multiple scales of domestic life, circulation, and collective space are interwoven into a single sectional logic. Instead of treating scale as a separation between units, the proposal uses it as a tool to generate overlap, proximity, and interaction across levels. The building is organised as a stack of differentiated spatial bands: compact individual units, double-height communal thresholds, and porous ground-level civic spaces. Each layer is calibrated to shift between privacy and exposure, allowing domestic life to extend into shared corridors, terraces, and transitional voids. The façade system reinforces this relational condition. Repetitive modular framing creates a clear structural order, while subtle variations in depth, transparency, and infill allow each unit to register individually within a collective rhythm. The result is a façade that reads both as a unified system and a collection of distinct lived spaces. At the base, the architecture opens fully to the street through activated ground-floor programs, positioning circulation and everyday movement as the primary social interface. Above, stacked balconies and interlocking corridors construct a vertical neighbourhood where visibility and adjacency replace isolation. The model operates across multiple scales of representation (1/4”, 1/16”, 1/32”) reinforcing the project’s central idea: that relational architecture must remain consistent from detail to urban reading, where each fragment participates in a larger system of collective life. posted by: @kohkihiramatsu co-designed with @jasonheiii #architecture #harvardgsd #housingdesign #sectionalarchitecture #collectiveliving #toffuco
