it’s just weird because she enrolled her daughter in these school seemingly fully prepared to keep a close eye and supplement with tutoring but it took until 9th grade to realize she didnt understand fractions? like ideals aside the execution was so insanely off

I am not sure why she didn’t put her daughter in kumon or another private tutoring program. Not knowing long division in middle school is not okay.

Unfortunately I a lot of well funded educational programs are not diverse at all. If keeping your child in touch with their roots is a deterrent for sending them to the best possible school for them than you need to do some soul searching. You can have your child join clubs and be active in their community while still prioritizing their education.

I feel so much for her daughter. I went to a low performing/funded public school and later went to a private school where I had to spend a lot of time catching up academically. If I found out that my parents made me go through that voluntarily, our relationship would not have recovered.

The thing that's throwing me off is that she's so concerned about her child's education but didn't realize how bad the education was until much later. Are we not doing homework with our kids anymore? Why is she not checking in with teachers more and asking about the lesson plan? Are we not putting the child in extracurriculars that the school does not offer so they can thrive? I went to public school but my mom noticed right away I was not being challenged enough. She put me in extra curricular and advanced summer classes and programs

This is a lose lose situation. My parents put my siblings in private school that was “better” than public school and they both experienced anti Black racism there. Unless there’s a diverse, well resourced school nearby… there’s no obvious good options

That mother failed her daughter. My dad helped me get into a magnet program but my mom unenrolled me to go to the closer low performing school to spite him. Our issues really started there.

i went to a relatively under-resourced hs and i didn’t realize how behind i was until i got to my t10 university and i struggled A LOT. this stuff really has deleterious long term effects.

I can’t even finish watching this video over how infuriating it is. Why did she think her daughter would be the exception in an under-resourced school. Kids spend over 8 hours of their day in school. I worked with a nonprofit supporting low income students so I saw firsthand the way the whole system was messed up. Like she said teachers not grading on time or providing essential correction to student work product. I spent 5 years in that role, and I knew that the problem went beyond finances. There is no way a reporter who dedicated her entire career to educational inequity didn’t know it too. Infuriating. Plainly infuriating.

I saw another creator who debunked the “ under resourced” school premise. The issue in her elementary school was not being under resourced, but the teachers were not performing as they should. That includes teacher absenteeism. That schools teachers were making very reasonable salaries, well over 100K, but if the teachers do not perform, then the students academic performance will falter.

This was also my experience growing up really poor and only having access to severely under resourced schools, including the community college and four-year institution I went to. I only realized how bad it actually was when I went to my PhD program in a different state. I had the lowest score in every class and I often felt the other students thought I didn't belong there. I excelled in the lab, which is what got me by, but it was not easy.

Public schools are penalized with loss of funding when they don’t hit benchmarks. Meaning THEY NEVER WILL HIT BENCHMARKS.

I went to PWIs most of my life and it was difficult being one of the only black girls throughout school. My parents wanted the best education and sadly that was on the “white side of town”. I did many activities outside of school that allowed me to be around my people which was AMAZING for my development and self esteem. You have to seek out those opportunities to balance it out if your kids aren’t getting that connection in school.

This is so tough because then the conversation also goes into sending your child to a school where nobody looks like them and having to help them navigate through that… 😩 it’s a lose lose
