Twelve boys and their coach were trapped more than two kilometres inside a flooded cave, and the only way out ran through pitch black water that had already killed a man trying to reach them. Someone had to decide whether it was safer to sedate children and float them past that risk, or leave them underground until the monsoon made the choice for everyone. That decision fell to an anaesthetist from Adelaide. Richard Harris, known to almost everyone as Harry, was a cave diver in his spare time, the kind of specialist hobby that rarely intersects with a person's day job until, in July 2018, his happened to be exactly what a disaster on the other side of the world required. The Wild Boars football team, twelve boys aged 11 to 16 and their 25 year old coach, had gone exploring the Tham Luang cave system in northern Thailand and become trapped by rising floodwater. They survived for more than two weeks in a dry chamber deep inside the mountain, found alive on 2 July by British divers after a search that had gripped the world. Finding them was only the beginning of the danger. Getting them out meant guiding untrained, frightened children through flooded, pitch dark passages so narrow that adult divers had to remove their air tanks to pass through some sections. A Thai navy diver, Saman Gunan, died delivering air tanks along the route before the rescue even began, a stark demonstration of exactly what the cave was capable of doing to experienced divers. Harris, alongside his diving partner Craig Challen, was called in specifically for his medical expertise combined with cave diving experience, a combination almost nobody else in the operation had. He assessed each boy's physical condition inside the cave itself, then made the call that defined the entire rescue: each child would be anaesthetised before the dive out, to prevent panic from getting any of them, or the divers guiding them, killed in water where panic meant death. It was an extraordinary medical decision made underground, under time pressure, with no real precedent to lean on. If a boy woke up mid dive in a flooded passage barely wide enough for one person, the consequences could have been fatal for both of them. Over three days, 12 to 10 July 2018, the boys and their coach were extracted one and two at a time in an operation that involved more than 90 divers from around the world. Harris gave the medical clearance for each child before they went in, and administered the anaesthetic himself. Every single one of them made it out alive. Harris was the last diver out of the cave. He surfaced to learn that his own father had died in Adelaide that same morning, while he was still underground finishing the operation that would save twelve other families from a very different kind of loss. He had no time to grieve before facing the world's media. He simply kept working, then flew home to bury his father. For his role in what became one of the most remarkable rescue operations in modern history, Harris was awarded the Star of Courage, Australia's second highest bravery decoration, recognising acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril. He and Challen were also each awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the international community, and in 2019 the pair became the first joint Australians of the Year in the award's history. Harris returned home largely reluctant to describe himself as a hero, the way many people who do something extraordinary under pressure tend to talk about it afterward, as simply the job in front of them that needed doing. The mission asked him to weigh an almost unbearable set of risks against each other, underground, with children's lives balanced on his judgment, and he made that call correctly twelve times in a row.
