There is something incredibly special about knowing that Letty’s story might make things a little easier for the babies who come after her. 🤍 When she was born, my entire world became about getting her through the next thing. Getting through CDH repair. Getting off the ventilator. Learning to breathe with her tiny left lung. Learning to eat. Growing. Getting strong enough to finally come home. I never thought any part of our experience would reach beyond her hospital room. Feeding has been one of the hardest pieces of Letty’s journey. She needed more calories than breastmilk alone could provide, but traditional fortification was so hard on her stomach. I had spent months pumping around the clock for her, and I desperately wanted to find a way to give her the calories she needed without making feeding even more difficult for her. That search led me to Milkify Medical. They could take my breastmilk, freeze-dry it into powder, and use that powder to fortify my own milk for Letty. The problem was that it wasn’t something her hospital allowed. At first, that could have been the end of the conversation. Instead, I kept asking. I researched. I sent information. I talked to her team. I advocated for them to consider something they hadn’t done before because I truly believed it could help my daughter. Eventually, they listened. Johns Hopkins All Children’s created a path for us to use Milkify Medical for Letty. And somewhere along the way, this stopped feeling like just our win. Because Letty won’t be the last baby in that NICU who struggles with traditional fortification. There will be another mom who has pumped through the middle of the night for months. Another baby whose stomach just can’t tolerate what is normally used. Another family desperate for an alternative. And because of this tiny little girl, that conversation can look different for them. I’m so proud of her for that. Letty has spent her entire life overcoming things that were never supposed to be easy. She has been the smallest person in the room through all of this, but somehow she has already managed to leave something behind that is bigger than her. One day I’ll get to tell her that before she was even old enough to understand what any of this meant, she helped open a door for another baby. That her fight mattered beyond her own story.
