“People remember what you never gave them more than what you gave them.” Supporting your friends, parents, helping siblings, and showing up for family are important. But what happens when helping everyone else begins to damage your own financial future? In this conversation, I share a powerful lesson about black tax, family financial responsibilities, budgeting, and setting healthy financial boundaries. I tell the story of a young woman who took a bank loan to clear her parents’ debt and help save their marriage. The family experienced relief, but just three months later, her father took another loan. It was a reminder that financial support alone cannot solve a problem when the underlying habits remain unchanged. As Alfred Mathu, The Financial Doctor, my advice is simple: take responsibility for your finances before taking responsibility for everyone else’s. Here are three lessons to remember: • Set a family support budget. Decide how much you can comfortably contribute without neglecting your own bills, children, savings, investments, and retirement. • Create a clear family support structure. Agree on contributions, payment dates, and responsibilities to reduce confusion, repeated requests, and comparisons among siblings. • Build your own financial security. You can support your loved ones more sustainably when your own financial foundation is strong. In my own family, my siblings and I agreed on a monthly contribution for our mother’s needs, deposited by the 15th of every month. Having a clear structure has helped us support her consistently while managing our individual responsibilities. Remember, you can love your family deeply and still have financial boundaries. Helping others should be part of your financial plan, not a reason to abandon it. Let’s talk: Have you ever felt financially stretched because of family obligations? How do you balance supporting your loved ones with building your own wealth?
