@americanveteranscenter: When Ernest “Ernie” Mogor enlisted in the U.S. Army, he trained with the M1 Garand—but was soon designated to carry the Browning Automatic Rifle, a weapon he quickly came to admire. Serving with the 76th Infantry Division, Mogor entered combat in early 1945 during the crossings of the Sauer and Moselle Rivers near Echternach, Luxembourg. For three months, he fought as Allied forces pushed through the Siegfried Line and advanced toward Germany. While positioned along the Rhine River, Mogor was struck by a German sniper’s bullet that had first passed through his friend. Remarkably, both men survived the war.
