Insulin Administration —
Route: Most insulin is given subcutaneously (SC) using an insulin syringe, pen, or pump.
Common sites: Abdomen, thigh, upper arm, or buttocks. Rotate sites to prevent lipodystrophy.
Before injection: Check the insulin name, strength, dose, expiry, and blood glucose as prescribed.
Injection: Clean the site, inject into the subcutaneous tissue, and follow the device instructions.
Timing:
Rapid-acting: usually immediately before/with meals.
Short-acting (regular): commonly about 30 minutes before meals.
Intermediate/long-acting: given at scheduled times, independent of meals depending on the regimen.
Safety: Do not share needles/pens. Monitor for hypoglycemia (sweating, tremor, hunger, confusion, dizziness).
Storage: Unopened insulin is generally refrigerated at 2–8°C; do not freeze. Follow the specific product's storage instructions.
