@gatorchris1: Cannibalism in gators!! Yes it does happen, but not as much as people think! I’ll have to do a better video talking about it when he’s more calm😂. Normally cannibalism in crocodilians happens when one dies from something else or is killed by a conspecific with another purpose behind the homicide. Cannibalism as in one hunting another specifically to eat it does happen in crocodilians, but not as often or with the motives people think. Crocodilians engaging in cannibalism likely are not thinking “ooo I’m going to eat one of my kind”, it’s often more like “if it fits in my mouth it’s food” or scavenging. Sounds like weird nuanced differences, but there’s a big difference between scavenging the body of the fallen compared to actively stalking and hunting another adult in a predatory manner that takes a concerted effort, skill, and involves risk. In my career working hands on with many species of crocodilians I’ve only ever seen “murder” cannibalism like this a few times personally, as in where an adult animal targeted and hunted another healthy adult as prey and killed the other with the clear intent to eat it. #Gator #alligator
