This robot doesn't move by walking. It grows. Developed by researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology, the robot extends itself by continuously 3D-printing a hollow thermoplastic tube from its tip. Instead of dragging its entire body through an environment, it creates new body length as it moves, allowing it to navigate spaces that would be nearly impossible for conventional robots. That's what makes the design so fascinating. Because the robot advances by growing rather than pushing or rolling, it can squeeze through narrow gaps, curve around obstacles, and explore confined environments without needing complex legs or wheels. The potential applications go far beyond the lab. Robots like this could one day assist in search-and-rescue missions, inspect damaged infrastructure, explore underground tunnels, or access hazardous areas that are too dangerous or inaccessible for people. It's also a reminder that robotics isn't only about building machines that imitate humans. Sometimes the most effective designs take inspiration from nature instead. Like climbing vines, this robot expands into its environment rather than forcing its way through it. The future of robotics may not always walk. Sometimes, it will simply grow.
