There will be a State Pension. All countries on the same boat. Governments will be forced to raise pension age and reduce the amount provided. That's the trend. Available options: private pensions, personal investments to help to be in a better position later on.

so why did I receive a letter when I was in my 40's saying if I wanted a full pension i needed to make my NI up by making a payment. Why was I asked to do this if my NI contributions dont cover my pension

Agreed - National Insurance has never really even by hypothecated. My understanding is that it was invented as a concept to persuade people to effectively pay more tax so that pensions, the NHS and benefits could be funded.

The setting up of the state pension was carried out by Labour politicians following the mores and political pragmatism of the time. They swept away the old charities and Poor Laws and made taxpayers the sole providers of pensions for their peers. The system was deeply flawed from the outset but there has never been any serious attempt to improve it. There never will be as long as our lords and masters in the House of Commons receive gold-plated inflation proof pensions paid for by the same taxpayers.
