The real question is whether African countries are gaining enough agency, value and long-term development from these partnerships in return. And for Namibia, what exactly is being put in place to protect what we need to maintain our sovereignty and control over our resources? Who owns the infrastructure? What happens when the agreement no longer serves Namibia? Are there clear exit clauses, safeguards and consequences if things start going sideways? Because entering a partnership is one thing. Having the power to say “this is no longer working for us” and actually walk away is another. We shouldn’t just ask what they are bringing to Namibia. We should be asking what control Namibia retains once they are here.
