@lizasamuellcsw: Being hard on yourself is not always discipline. Sometimes it is a survival strategy you learned long ago. A way to stay motivated. Stay accepted. Stay useful. Stay in control. Stay ahead of criticism before someone else could hurt you first. So now your inner voice pushes constantly. Do better. Work harder. Do not mess up. Do not slow down. Do not be lazy. Do not fall behind. And after enough years, self punishment starts sounding responsible instead of painful. But healing is realizing you do not have to keep hurting yourself in order to become better. Some people were taught that shame creates growth. But safety, compassion, and support are what actually allow people to thrive. What’s something you wish you’d learned sooner?
