I share knowledge and everything that could make other photographers grow and improve. I even published a book on the business of photography last month because i’ve been sharing knowledge on photography business for quite a while.

I don’t think so, there’s so much information out there. When people ask in person, they won’t take that information and use it…and if they do use it. They end up doing exactly what you do (which mean they have taken your identity.) if it’s business wise, then yes it’s definitely gatekept but the art itself isn’t

Never gate kept from any other photographer, even lent a 150-600 lense to a kid who was starting out so he could zoom right in on a fighter jet. Showed him the settings, how pan the lense and then followed each other on IG so he can message me if he needs help again.

I think part of me understands why people get defensive. It’s like people putting their arm over their work when they’re trying to write the answers to a test. If you’ve worked really hard over many years and had no quick way to learn then I sort of get it. BUT personally I am very much community over competition, so much so I run workshops and portfolio evenings now. It’s SO much fun being able to geek out with other photographers it’s awesome!!

Who are you talking to that does this lol, every photographer I know is more than happy to share because if anything it’s just an opportunity to flex? Whilst on the other hand how does telling someone they shot at 1/200 on a Sony actually help another photographer

I’ve never understood this attitude. There’s room for all of us. And the newbies are the future of our trade/hobby. There’s nothing I enjoy more than watching a young photographer develop their skill.

Tbh I never got it. I never got the help from others but I always shared my knowledge to everyone around me, especially when people are reaching out on DMs or comments. And then I get messages like “photography community is so friendly and willing to help” and then I tell me “no they are not, but I am sure there are few other ppl who are willing to share, but most no” 😂

I was super lucky that I managed to have an amazing relationship with a photography teacher when I was a NQT art teacher who became a mentor and basically taught me photography from scratch. He had so much industry experience and was one of the most talented and knowledgeable people I ever met! He never kept knowledge a secret and constantly wanted to help anyone and everyone improve their photography. He encouraged me to start with Film photography and told me that it would help me really understand the intricacies of photography, he was so right, when I bought my first mirrorless camera it made the transition so easy. But it’s definitely something I’ve experienced when I’ve gone to events and I can’t see other photographers side eyeing my gear and making me feel like I’m not welcome because I don’t have a ££££ camera and lens 😅

It’s the best part when I’m out, particularly at a race track, I always see lads struggling to get good shots, a quick demo and show them what I do and hey presto they get better images.

I think people are scared to be outdone. me personally if someone does something I haven't that I think is cool I'd rather learn and bring my own game up

I love when people share setting etc I’ve just got a camera Sony a6700 just to showcase our business better I kno not much so seeing people share tips or settings is awesome 🙌🏻 very thankful when they do 🖤
