There’s something about this moment that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully explain. That 12-year-old girl went to a Hilary Duff concert with her mom because she loved Hilary. She got a T-shirt, had an amazing night, and went home with a happy memory. She had absolutely no idea what life was going to ask of her in the years that followed. She didn’t know she’d eventually have to face cancer at 14. She didn’t know she’d have to face it again at 32. She didn’t know how much she would have to grow, fight, grieve, and become the woman she is today. But tonight, for a little while, I got to be that girl again. I wasn’t thinking about everything I’ve survived. I wasn’t worrying about the past or the future. I was just standing there a little ecstatic because Hilary Duff was wearing the same shirt as me. 💕 And maybe that’s why it felt so powerful. It wasn’t just nostalgia. It was this beautiful little bridge between the innocent 12-year-old girl who loved Hilary and the 34-year-old woman who has survived so much. And my mom was there again. Same girl. Same mom. Same Hilary. Same shirt. Twenty-two years later. Except this time, I understand just how precious that little moment really is. That little girl had no idea what was ahead of her. She didn’t know she’d have to become strong in ways she never should have had to. She didn’t know how much she would have to fight. She just knew she loved Hilary Duff and was excited to go her first concert with her mom. And somehow, after all of it, here I am—wearing that same shirt again, standing beside my mom, watching Hilary wear the same one. It’s almost like life handed me this tiny, completely unexpected reminder: “Look how far you’ve come.” I didn’t plan for a shirt to mean this much. I just wanted to wear something special from my childhood and have another amazing night with my mom. But this ridiculous, magical coincidence touched a part of me that I think needed it. And now I’m sitting here crying because sometimes something beautiful finally reaches a part of you that has been carrying too much for too long. Tonight, I got to be that little girl again. Same girl. Same mom. Same Hilary. Same shirt. But this time, that little girl is standing inside a woman who survived things she never could have imagined. And I think 12-year-old me would be so damn proud of her. Maybe that’s why I needed this moment so much. For a little while, I didn’t have to be strong. I didn’t have to figure anything out. I didn’t have to worry about tomorrow. I just got to smile, scream, cry, and feel pure, uncomplicated happiness. And honestly? I needed that. 🧡🧡 #hilaryduff #grandrapidsmichigan #acrisureamphitheater #cancersurvivorx2 #leukemiawarriorx2
