Turns out my love of old buildings and old cars has finally found a dress code. Unfortunately, it involved me wearing it. 😂 I spend a fairly unhealthy amount of my life obsessing over old buildings - taking things that have been written off, finding a new purpose for them and bringing them back to life. I also love old cars. So @The Goodwood Revival is basically catnip for me: a whole weekend dedicated to celebrating things from the past that are still far too good to throw away. Cars restored rather than scrapped. Heritage celebrated rather than sanitised. Old ideas given new life. There’s probably a regeneration strategy hiding in there somewhere. The slight downside was that celebrating the past apparently required me to dress as though I’d actually come from it. First up: 1940s me, looking considerably less convincing than the cars. Then came the Goodwood Revival Ball, which raises money for charity and this year was giving very strong Game of Thrones vibes. Cue another costume change and my brief but deeply unnecessary transformation into something approaching a character from Norse mythology. Nobody asked for it. Nobody needed it. But photographic evidence unfortunately exists. The really interesting bit for me, though, was the setting. The whole thing took place inside a temporary structure, transformed for one night into this completely immersive, spectacular space. And inevitably, while everyone else was enjoying the party, I was looking at the walls and ceiling thinking… “We could do this in one of our buildings.” Because whether it’s a knackered old mill, a beautiful old car or apparently a middle-aged property developer dressed as a Viking, I’m increasingly convinced almost anything can be given another life. Restore it. Reuse it. Reinvent it. And occasionally dress it up as something completely ridiculous. - @timheatley_
