Apple announced watches that will listen all day and write up your conversations, with a title and key points, saved to an app on your phone. Double press the crown and the last 15 seconds of whatever was just said appears on screen as text. Apple says it's opt in, which is true, but only for the person wearing it. You don't get one. If the person across the table turned it on, you're in it, and nobody got your consent. The 15 second one plays a chime, even on silent. The all day one gives you nothing, no light, no sound, no way to know it's on. Lawyers in four states told Bloomberg it could break eavesdropping laws in the 11 states where everyone in a conversation has to agree. Apple has already paid $95 million to settle a lawsuit claiming Siri recorded private conversations and passed pieces to advertisers, which Apple denied. Apple isn't alone. Amazon and Meta have both stripped out voice privacy settings their users relied on, and more always-on products launch every month. Corporations keep creeping further into daily life, and it often feels like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta control most of what we use.
