When I walk past elderly folks using a cane, walker, wheelchair, etc - I always say, “wanna race!?” Sometimes we have a smile and laugh, sometimes a brief exchange, and sometimes a full conversation. I think too many elderly feel lonely. I like to comedically tell them that I see them. ❤️

Not a cold opener, but I go to a lot of gay finance guy events for networking purposes. I always find someone who looks a little lost and I grab him and I say are you here for a boyfriend or are you here for a job and no matter what he says I then say I got you. And then use him to meet other people by taking him around the room and saying to strangers, “hey can I introduce you guys to my new friend Chris?”

Walk up to someone and say "so who do you think is the murderer?" and then start scanning the room. I might even casually nod at someone and describe why I believe the innocent look is just a facade 🧐

Not sure it counts, but my 6 yr old like to ask upon first meeting, "What's your favorite cheese?" It's ctually pretty wild how disarming that question is and how people open up from it! 😆

If I walk up to a group of strangers (like the parents at my kids first softball practice) and they’re just sitting there and not talking, I break out “is this where the party is?” I always get a laugh and usually engagement. An easy segue for intros.

Idk if this counts as a cold opener but my friend that’s passed taught me if someone asks how you doin? If I was any better I’d be you. Immediate smiles and chuckles. Good material anyway if not a cold opener.
