They both needed it they just also wanted it for the wrong reasons: the loss of his community made Aang want to go in alone; as a result of his childhood, Zuko desperately wanted to prove his worth to -not just his father/kingdom- but to him self. The stakes were always far higher for Aang however Zuko also needed to regain his honor at some point or another for his peace of mind.
