They found Stone Age handprints with missing fingers… and for decades, archaeologists wondered if something horrifying had happened. Deep inside prehistoric caves, researchers discovered hand stencils left behind by people who lived thousands of years ago. At first glance, they look strangely familiar. And carried out countless other tasks where having functioning fingers could literally determine whether you survived. So researchers began asking another question. What if the fingers were never missing at all? Imagine putting your hand against a wall. Now bend one of your fingers down toward your palm. If somebody sprays pigment around your hand, the resulting outline can make that finger appear to stop halfway. Fold several fingers down… …and suddenly your perfectly intact hand looks mutilated. This offers a completely different interpretation of some prehistoric hand images. Instead of documenting amputations, the artists may have deliberately positioned their fingers while creating the stencil. And that possibility creates an even bigger mystery. Why? Because if these finger positions were intentional, they might actually mean something. Researchers have explored whether prehistoric people could have been using their hands to communicate information. Different finger combinations could potentially represent numbers. They might have represented individuals, groups or identities. They could have been symbolic gestures. Or perhaps they formed part of a communication system whose meaning disappeared thousands of years ago. Think about that. When you look at a prehistoric hand stencil, you aren’t necessarily looking at someone randomly decorating a wall. You could be looking at a message. A message created by a human being who lived in a completely different world. No cities. No smartphones. No written language as we know it.
