@travelwithnoon: Picasso, Matisse and Chagall all ate at the same tiny inn in France. The ones who couldn't pay left a painting instead. In 1920, a young innkeeper named Paul Roux opened a café with three tables in the hill village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence and told broke artists they could pay with a canvas instead of cash. Matisse, Braque, Léger and Miró all took the deal. By the 1950s, a three-room inn in a village of a thousand people was hanging a private modern art collection that museums would have killed for, right over the bread baskets. Then one night in 1960, thieves stole the whole thing, save for one painting they left behind: the big Chagall. A year later, every piece turned up at a train station in Marseille. His family never sold a single canvas. Today his great-grandson runs the place, and the collection still hangs exactly where it always did. Share this with someone who would rather eat under a Miró than stand in line to see one. You're broke and just opened a tiny café. An unknown painter offers you a canvas instead of cash for the bill. Deal or no deal.

Chagall didn't just visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence. He's buried there, in the village's own cemetery.
