Linux is typically packaged as a Linux distribution, which includes the kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. ​Because the Linux kernel is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), anyone is free to commercialize, modify, and redistribute the code. This flexibility has allowed Linux to become the foundational layer for a vast majority of modern technology infrastructure. While desktop users are often familiar with personal distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and Arch Linux, the kernel's reach extends far beyond traditional personal computing. Major commercial and specialized operating systems—including Google's Android, ChromeOS, Valve's SteamOS, and Smart TV operating systems—are all built directly on top of the Linux kernel. ​When looking beneath the surface of modern operating systems, many platforms that appear distinct are actually running Linux under the hood. In contrast, other operating system families rely on entirely different kernel architectures: BSD variants (like FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD) trace their lineage back to the original Berkeley Software Distribution, macOS and iOS run on the Darwin kernel (which incorporates elements of Mach and FreeBSD), and Microsoft Windows operates on the Windows NT kernel architecture. Additionally, early systems like NeXTSTEP laid the foundation for modern Unix-based environments.
