@sadarish: The Wealthy Apple is a historic, cold-hardy heirloom apple variety developed in Excelsior, Minnesota, in the 1860s by pioneer breeder Peter Gideon. The Breeder: Peter Gideon developed the variety on his homestead near Lake Minnetonka after purchasing seeds from a grower in Bangor, Maine. The Name: Gideon named the apple after his wife, Wealthy Hull Gideon. Genetics: While long believed to be a cross involving a Siberian crab apple, DNA testing has shown it is actually a cross between the Duchess of Oldenburg and Jonathan varieties. Significance: It was one of the very first apples bred to successfully withstand harsh northern winters (surviving down to Zone 3 or colder), paving the way for cold-climate fruit growing in the Upper Midwest
