My ex also did this 🤨 I gave birth in January and my country’s mother day are in February. Our baby was two weeks old when he said about my first ever mother day: “you have to a mother at least a year to deserve any Mother’s Day present”. Broke my heart into a million pieces.

He doesn’t understand or “feel” any social codes, and anything he knows, is learnt or performative behaviour, but he’ll always be insecure for not knowing what you’re “supposed” to do. He felt called out by your mom, and he will have a lifetime of insecurity around things like this. This makes him take out his anger on you. He knows he’s lacking and always will be the weird one.

My mum asked me to arrange a nice birthday cake from a local bakery for my sister (1100 miles away) because she knew sister‘s husband would not. And then he tried to pass that birthday cake off as something he arranged. Unsurprisingly they’re divorced.

I've had similar experiences with my ex throughout the relationship at every possible occasion. on the very first mother's day that I was a mother and thought a token present or in fact to just celebrating the occasion I was meant with a final "you're not my mother, that makes no sense"
