Written by: Afendi Muteki ----- It is obivious that Mohammed Wardi is the most famous Sudanese singer in the Horn of Africa countries (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, South Sudan). But in countries of the Middle East and North Africa where Arabic is the official language, it is Abdulkarim Al-Kabli who earned high recognition and numerous fans. This is because of the artist's unique singing style, his mastering of the "oud", his operatic voice and his abundant use of the classical Arabic poetry in his songs. I was listining to the songs of the artist for more than 30 years. And here is my selection of the best 8 songs of Abdelkarim Al-Kabli, the legendary musician, folklorist, songwriter, poet and vocalist of my heart who passed away on December 2/2021. Note that this selection expresses only my view; others may have different view. ----- 1. "Shaza Zahr" Perhaps this is the best song ever written in Sudan and the whole of Africa. Its lyrics is very simple to conserve in mind; its melody easily attracts listeners of all sorts. From Al-Kabli's performances of this song, the 1974 version is higly applauded due to the artist's mastering of the "Oud". 2. "Husnak faah mashaa'er" Another song that many music specialists consider the best hit of Abdelkarim Al-Kabli. It is admired especially for the allegorical method viable in the lyrics wherein the singer expressed the beauty of his beloved. 3. "Ya aghla min ayneya" This is the most famous and easily recognizable song of Al-Kabli among the Oromo and Somali speakers in Ethiopia, Somalia and elsewhere. It is also covered by various artists including certain European and American bands. 4. "Amir alayya alaa qalbil kabir" A wonderful, expressive and passionate song that Al-Kabli included in many of his albums. The outstanding features of Al-Kabli's songs also clearly seen in "Amir alayya". For example, the song's chorus appear twice: at the beginning of the song and at the end of song. between the two points; the singer flew over the lyrics of the song without uttering the chorus. I heard that this is most famous song of Al-Kabli in Eritrea. 5. "Asia wa Africa" This is a nationalistic song that praises the unity of African and Asian nations against imperialism, colonialsim, neo-liberalism, corporate agression and economic subjugation. Though it was written in early 1960s, it also expresses the reality of our day. "Asia wa Africa" was the first song Al-Kabli performed in the presence of large audiences. Among the spectators of the that presentation by Abdelkarim Al-Kabli were the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser and Sudanese President General Abud. This song was written first in memory of the Nonalignment Movement which was born at the end of the Bandong Conference of 1955. In the song, Alkabli praised the leaders who strived greatly to ensue the idea non-alignment (such as Josiph B. Tito of Yugoslavia, Sukarno of Indonesia, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, K. Nikromah of Ghana, Gamal Abdel-Nasser of Egypt, Ahmed Benbela of Algeria etc). 6. "Kunta fi hafla laila" I dare say that this is the most beautiful song Ustaz Abdel-Karim Al-Kabli sung in recent years (i.e. in the new millennium). And interestingly, "Kunta fi Hafla Laila" is the ringtone of all of the cellphones I have used in the last eight years. 7. "Gamar dorin" I met many Sudanese music lovers who say this is the best song of Al-Kabli. Sudanese listeners of all sorts consider it a brand work of Al-Kabli in all of his musical journery. You may know this by the fact that most of the Sudanese social media users has posted this song online more than any other songs of Al-Kabli whene they first heard his death 8. "Sukkar, Sukkar" This song is higly adorable for its poetry which was written in Classical Arabic. On the other hand, it is the most famous song of Al-Kabli among Amharic speakers in Ethiopia and elsewhere.
