@kmob1003.global: Africa is not a country. And Ugochi is done explaining that gently. In “African in America,” she takes every lazy stereotype, every ignorant question, every savior fantasy — and turns it into a declaration of identity, inheritance, and pride. At the Annual Youth Speaks Grand Slam, she confronts the assumptions that flatten Africa into one language, one history, one culture — or one story of poverty waiting to be rescued. Then the poem turns inward. A daughter raised in California. A Nigerian mother whose accent still carries home. A grandmother she wishes she had more words to speak with. A young woman living in the space between African American and African in America. “Igbo may not be my mother tongue, but it is my mother’s tongue.” And when people say they cannot understand her mother, Ugochi offers another way to listen: “Hear Nigeria in her voice.” This isn’t simply a response to ignorance. It is a refusal to let other people define the size of her identity. Africa is not one country. An accent is not a deficiency. And heritage does not disappear because you were born somewhere else. KMOB1003 heard the signal. I hate to admit that I used to be that white girl who was too stupid to educate myself on the different continents. Now that I’ve been with my boyfriend for almost 3 years, my eyes have opened up to the different cultures around the world. (My bf is South African)

While I agree with the sentiment here spoken to, it would do well to be published more widely! This shows that we have the same enemies, so we need not be enemies to each other!
